The Linked Learning Advantage: Using Linked Learning to Implement the Common Core State Standards

This brief examines how Linked Learning, an innovative approach to high school reform, offers an advantage to teachers, schools, and districts implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Both the CCSS and Linked Learning seek to prepare students for college and career by connecting learning in the classroom with real-world applications outside the school. Practitioners, administrators, parents, policymakers, and others can use this brief as a guide to understanding the parallels between the CCSS and Linked Learning and to discover strategic approaches for combining the CCSS and Linked Learning to design high-quality, relevant, 21st century instruction for all students. 

Quality Teaching of English Learners (QTEL) Impact Study |URL|

ELL face a double task in school: learning both the grade-level content and literacy competencies that all students must learn, and doing so in a language they are still acquiring.  As a result, their teachers must develop the knowledge and expertise to integrate language and literacy instruction into rigorous subject matter instruction.  This study highlights the need for on-site collaboration, coaching, and time as essential conditions for widespread changes in teachers' across a school or district. 

Educational Outcomes for English Learners in the Middle Grades|PDF|

Using common curricular approaches and instructional strategies across content areas and grade levels will improve students’ content knowledge and academic language development, reduce classroom management issues, and create common objectives for a professional learning community. To undertake such a shared approach, teachers need district support in the form of planning time, professional development focusing on language development across the content areas, curricula with a dual focus on content and language, coaching from a specialist, and strong communication between administrators and teachers.

 Improving the Opportunities and Outcomes of California’s Students Learning English: Findings from School District–University Collaborative Partnerships | PDF| 

The implementation of new state standards including new English Language Development standards will require major changes in teaching and learning for all students including ELs, while the Local Control Funding Formula gives districts that educate large numbers of ELs additional resources to improve the services that they provide. To take full advantage of these opportunities policymakers and educators should rely on the best available evidence to shape state and district policies and to inform classroom instructional practice for EL students.

 Getting Ideas into Action: Building Networked Improvement Communities in Education |PDF|

In this Carnegie essay by Anthony Bryk, Louis Gomez, and Alicia Grunow, the authors argue that the social organization of the research enterprise is badly broken and a very different alternative is needed. They instead support a science of improvement research and introduce the idea of a networked improvement community that creates the purposeful collective action needed to solve complex educational problems. The essay builds off an earlier essay by Bryk and Gomez, “Ruminations on Reinventing an R&D Capacity for Educational Improvement,” prepared for a 2007 American Enterprise Institute Conference.
